What did Donald Trump do today?
He blew up at interviewers for asking questions, which makes sense if you consider his answers.
Time published an interview with Trump today, including the full transcript. That includes the part, near the end, where Trump blew up at Eric Cortellessa and Sam Jacobs for not asking "one fucking positive question":
TRUMP: It was a disappointment to a lot of Republicans. So that's just—well, Sleepy Joe gave pardons to everybody. He gave them to Fauci. He gave them to this. But you mean I'm not allowed to give them, but Sleepy Joe's allowed to give them? This ain't gonna be much of a story. Here we are doing this. You haven't asked me one fucking positive question. All of this. What about this? What about that? What about that? What about this? All negative. Why are you devoting all this time to the White House? You know how I do, I do that out of my back pocket. I pay for a lot of it, but I fix it because the White House should look like that. It shouldn’t look like—if you would have stood in that balcony and looked at that wall, half the wall was falling. It's actually dangerous. People are walking under, crap was falling off it all the time. Every time it rained, it was leaking, horrible. Now it's perfect, and I would say that I should be given credit for fixing the White House because I'm also doing very well with the war. I'm doing very well with another war that we already won, Venezuela. Do you notice you haven't asked me a question about Venezuela?
We did earlier.
It's unusual for Trump to complain about being given the chance to talk about his alterations to the White House, either the redecorating he's done to the West Wing or his destruction of the East Wing. Normally, he will talk about it at great length whether or not he's asked.
But Trump was in a terrible mood during the interview, in which he notably struggled to stay on topic, and at times to even finish a thought. The swerve to Venezuela at the end was typical of the disjointed answers he gave to other questions.
Some of the notable points in the interview:
- Trump insisted that that "oil" (he meant gasoline) was "$1.90" in Iowa, which he seemed to think he had visited recently as part of campaigning for the midterms. In reality, he has not been there since January of this year, although he is tentatively scheduled to campaign there in the coming weeks.
Gas in Iowa is currently about $4.19, and diesel, which is even more important to the agricultural state, is $6.39 per gallon.
- He answered a question about AI executive Sam Altman by talking about how his genetics make him more intelligent than other people.
Do you trust Sam Altman?
I like him. Do I trust him? Who do I trust? I like Sam Altman. Smart. Dario's smart. They're all smart. We're dealing with a very high level of IQ. Very very high level. That's a good thing. I like that. I like it. Did you see the story about my uncle?
The one who taught at MIT?
I have the highest of IQs. I have the highest. I'm fine, and I understand that stuff. You know, my uncle was at MIT for 41 years, and you know, I'm a—I believe in genetics, frankly, and I understand. I understand it much more than I think any president would, because I do have an ability on this. I have an ability on those things that were the new frontiers.
What I've done is I've created, for instance, these massive plants have no—We have no electricity in our grid.
- He said that the Secret Service wanted him to "take down" the Oval Office, which he said he declined to do because of its historic nature. This was apparently a story that came to him after he said he was trying to find a way to make it illegal for future presidents to change what he's done to the White House.
What will you miss the most about the White House?
This beautiful room that nobody should be allowed to rip down. The Oval Office. I've been asking Susie for six months to give me a statement. Will we save this room? Will we make it a federal landmark?
No one can change what you've done to it, you're saying.
No.
No one can tear it down.
I see the Secret Service looking, and I say, "What are you guys looking at?” “Sir, we think the Oval Office should be taken down, and we'll build a new one, sir.” I said, "My ass, you can’t build a new one. This is a special place.” The cabinet room too, which I also think—show them the cabinet room when they go out, okay. The cabinet room’s gorgeous. That was a mess. It was a disgusting mess. This whole place was a disgusting mess, and now it's perfect. But Joe didn't do it.
[At this point, Trump appears to believe that the interview is over.] Well, I hope I get a decent story. I don't think—you know, it's hard to get a good story. Every question's a hit. I don't know what the hell's wrong.
Why does this matter?
- If Trump could have given an interview in which he didn't sound like he was suffering from agitation due to senility, he probably would have.
