What did Donald Trump do today?
He attended a funeral, as only he does.
World leaders, including Trump, gathered today in Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis. Trump disliked Francis and frequently attacked him in the media. He said the Mexican government was using Francis as a "pawn" because the head of the Roman Catholic church called for the humane treatment of immigrants and refugees, a basic tenet of Christianity and a particular emphasis in Catholicism. He said that in 2016, if he were not elected president, the Islamic State would somehow capture the Vatican.
Attendees were asked to dress in black, the traditional mourning color for such events. All but Trump did.
Video of the service caught Trump, who is 78 years old, apparently nodding off before starting awake again.
It is not uncommon for Trump to be unable to stay awake during the day, even at public events in the United States where he doesn't have the excuse of jet lag. He's been caught sleeping at campaign rallies and even several times during his own criminal trial.
Why does this matter?
- Other people's funerals are not about Donald Trump.
- A president who is too physically exhausted by the demands of the job to stay awake for two hours should probably resign.
